Car Hire Perth Airport

Perth Airport (PER) is found to the east of central Perth, an important and large city in Western Australia.  The airport handles approximately 12.6 million passengers per annum, which makes it the fourth busiest airport in Australia, and is served by many well known airline companies, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Alliance Airlines.  For many, the airport is a hub location as well.  The airport is surrounded by an excellent road network, and therefore many arriving passengers rent a car from one of the Perth Airport car hire companies.  Car rental rates are reasonable at this location, and high quality vehicles are supplied.

The car hire companies available at Perth Airport include Avis, Hertz, Alamo, National, Budget, Easycar, Europcar, Auto Europa and Sixt.  Regardless of the company chosen, an advanced online car rental reservation is recommended in order to receive the lowest rates and to ensure that the ideal car is available upon your arrival at the airport.  Each company has several car groups from which to choose, and offer cars that are smaller and ideal for city driving as well as those larger and ideal for groups of travellers.  Along with the vehicle, various items of equipment can be hired as well.

Passengers will arrive at either the International Terminal or the Domestic Terminals of the airport, depending on the origin of their flight.  The International Terminal is approximately 17km from central Perth, and on the eastern side of the main runway system, while the domestic terminals are found on the western side of the airport grounds, approximately 12km from central Perth.  The distance between the international and domestic facilities is about 11km.  Although most of the car hire companies have rental counters on both sides of the airport, passengers may need to transfer.  For convenience, the airport runs free shuttle buses for passengers who would like to travel between the domestic and international terminals.  The buses are available every twenty minutes, seven days a week, and at all hours.

There are two domestic terminals at Perth Airport, referred to as Terminal 3 and Terminal 4.  Their car rental counters are found on the ground floor nearby the arrivals area.  These terminals have many other facilities as well, and plenty of good shops and restaurants.  The car rental counters are also found on the ground floor of the International Terminal.  To rent a car from one of the Perth Airport car rental companies you will need to be at least 21 years of age, and the holder of a non-restricted drivers license that is printed in English.  Non-English licenses must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit – a document that can be obtained from the renter’s home country for translation purposes, rather than as a replacement of the original license.  Drivers younger than 25 years of age will pay higher rental rates for young drivers insurance.

The primary renter of a vehicle will also require a major credit card for payment of the rental, for example, American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard or Visa.  However, the car rental companies often accept debit cards at this location as well (with the Mastercard or Visa logos).  A hold of the estimated rental charges may be placed on the account, therefore these funds should be available at the start of the rental period.  Once you have completed the formalities of paperwork, you can collect your vehicle and be on your way.  Ensure that you know which type of fuel to use, are comfortable with the workings of the vehicle and that you have any emergency numbers to contact in case of an accident or breakdown.

Customers of the car hire companies’ frequent renter programs may not even need to stop at the rental counters.  They can go straight to their vehicle and leave the airport.  Avis provides the Avis Preferred program, customers of Hertz can belong to the Hertz #1 Club, Budget is popular for their Fastbreak Rental program and National’s Emerald Club was the first-ever comprehensive frequent renter program to be created.  For all customers, child seats and satellite navigation systems are available (possibly luggage racks as well).  These are useful, and sometimes essential, items that will cost a little extra.  However, from the car hire companies at Perth Airport, hand controls that can be used by a person with a lower limb disability are free of charge.  Other services are also available for persons with visual impairment, for example, a person under this circumstance can still be the primary renter of a vehicle, provided that he/she is accompanied by an able driver with a valid drivers license.

If it is inconvenient to return to Perth Airport, one way hires could be arranged.  The car may then be collected from the airport, but is allowed to be returned to an alternative location.  The rented car may not  be permitted to be driven to all parts of Australia, therefore always confirm your travel arrangements in advance with your rental provider, and cars may not be taken on ferries to any nearby island.

Hire cars in Australia and from the Perth Airport car hire companies come in all sizes.  There are those such as the Hyundai Getz and Nissan Micra that are ideal for couples or small families, and others that are large enough for eight or twelve passengers, such as the Kia Carnival and Toyota Commuter.  Smaller cars are generally the cheapest, but those of a medium size have fair rental rates as well.  They could be similar to the Skoda Octavia, Toyota Camry, Kia Cerato, Holden Cruze and Hyundai I45.

Australian motorists drive on the left-hand side of the road, and are required to follow all road rules, including the following general speed limits:  60kph or 38mph in urban areas, 100kph or 63mph on open roads and 110kph or 70mph on motorways and highways.  Perth roads are mostly well signposted, and all parts of the city can be navigated in a vehicle.  Various parking areas are available as well.  Travellers venturing to the outback areas should make sure they leave with plenty of fuel, and preferably have a good idea of where they are going.  A GPS unit is useful in this case.  Also be prepared for unexpected road users, such as kangaroos!

Choose any of the above-mentioned Perth Airport car hire companies for excellent service and a vehicle of good quality.
